    Fresh controversy over RBS leaked 'branch closure' document

    Royal Bank of Scotland faced fresh controversy today over reports that a leaked document appeared to contradict management claims on staff incentives.

    The bank has maintained that it is closing 52 branches in Scotland because more and more customers are using online banking.

    Trade unions at the bank had said this was because RBS was encouraging this by setting targets for switching customers online.

    But last week Ross McEwan the bank's chief executive told MPs that there were no targets for staff.

    He was asked by the Scottish Affairs Select Committee if it is “the case that staff have been set targets in these branches in order to secure these digital customers?”

    He replied: “No, it is not right.”
