He spent his childhood in the suburbs of Detroit, and according to his own recollections, life in his noisy family, with four other siblings, resembled a comedy show. He excelled in school, attending the prestigious Cranbrook Schools, and had a lively personality, enjoying joking around and chatting in class.

However, he never fought for leadership among his peers, as he was afraid of becoming the target of mockery.
